911 Calltaker Job Description

$18.38 - $20.11 per hour (depending on experience) – plus $1.25 per hour shift(night) differential

The Huntsville-Madison County 911 Center is seeking qualified individuals to join our team of dedicated 911 Calltakers. We need responsible and motivated people that have a passion to help others. This exciting career field will provide you this opportunity and will allow you to help others far beyond what most people will ever experience. 911 Calltakers answer 911 emergency calls and process or reroute them to emergency agencies (police, fire, medical) as needed. Calltakers follow a computerized protocol system that guides them step-by-step to gather the appropriate information and ask callers life-saving questions. Calltakers also use location and mapping systems to aid in locating 911 callers. Calltakers accomplish all of this and more while working in a new state-of-the-art 911 building with cutting-edge technology.

New Calltakers receive up to 12 weeks of training. Each is assigned a trainer/mentor who guides and teaches them the intricate components of 9-1-1 calltaking, to include techniques to properly communicate with 9-1-1 callers during highly emotional and stressful emergencies.

Required Education:

  • High School Diploma, GED or higher


Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to work 12-hour shifts (6:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m.)
  • Ability to type at least 25 words per minute with 80% accuracy
  • Must pass a computerized applicant test
  • Must pass a thorough post-job offer polygraph test
  • Must pass a post-job offer background check
  • Must pass a post-job offer physical examination (vision/hearing/drug screening)
